There are no precise rules about how to do pasta al forno. Or better, there are fews, then it is up to your fantasy and @quelcheinfrigo.

Main ingredients | 1kg of Pasta (short is better, for the first time in your life), 1 liter of Tomato sauce, 1 liter of Milk, few spoons of Flavor and Butter
Secondary ingredients |  1 Onion, Breadcrumbs, Oil, Pepper&Salt&Oregano
Fantasy ingredients | Meatballs, Fried aubergines, various Vegetables, Mozzarella, etc.

Step 1 | Basta un poco di zucchero la pillola va giù
Cut the onion in small pieces, cry a bit, fry them with some oil in a pan. When they start to sing all together “we are golden” (soundtrack available here) , add the tomato sauce and cook it for around 20min. Remember to add salt and a small little spoon of sugar, to contrast the tomatoes acidity. You can believe it or not, but there are some rules the italian grandma taught and you have to respect. So, put the sugar in it.

Step 2 | CaraMella, MortaDella. MandaRino! BaciNella
The most difficult part is this one: the BesciaMella. Melt 3 spoons of butter and add slowly the flavor (around 3 spoons too) until it gets creamy. Then slowly add the milk (not cold) and turn it until it get consistent. It’ll take around 30min. Do it with a small fire, otherwise you run the risk of burning it. The legend says you always have to turn it in one sense, preferably clockwise, otherwise it get crazy like the mayonnaise.

Step 3 | Architects love layers
Cook the pasta for 3/4 of the time written on the box, because it will finish cooking in the oven. When you have this 3 main elements ready, you deserve a clap. But the show must go on, so mix the pasta with the tomato sauce and prepare the baking tray. Layer by layer. Oil on the bottom, then you start with the first layer of pasta, then besciamella (and other cheeses, meatballs, vegetables, children, footballs, forniture, it depends how hungry you are) and repeat it until ingredients are finished. On the last layer, spread some breadcrumbs, pepper and dried oregano. Put it in the oven for 20min/180° and the last 5min with the grill oven program in order to make it crunchy on top.

“I personally suggest you to add some fried aubergines cubes in the tomato sauce or, if u have time, prepare the small meatballs to cook straight in the sauce.
